When I was in school, I thought I was doing everything right.

I memorized the phases of mitosis, knew how to solve for “x,” and could list the causes of World War I in bullet points. I followed instructions, aced tests, and genuinely believed that if I did everything “right,” I’d be ready for the real world.

But real life? Yeah, it never handed me a syllabus.

No one prepared me for writing a resignation email without over-apologizing, or how to manage that awful sinking feeling when your savings hit a new low.

They didn’t teach me how to stay calm during a Zoom interview when the Wi-Fi suddenly drops… or how to reply when someone sends “let’s circle back” in an email you don’t understand but pretend to.

And don’t get me started on taxes.

It hit me somewhere between job rejections and burnt-out evenings that school prepared me for exams — not existence.

And honestly? I wish they’d included a few more practical chapters.

Like:

  • How to say “no” without guilt.
  • How to self-soothe when anxiety shows up at 2:07 a.m.
  • How to balance ambition with actual sleep.
  • How to ask for help before you collapse.

But maybe life isn’t something you prep for in a classroom. Maybe it’s a mess you slowly figure out by tripping your way through it.

Here’s the thing: there are no grace marks in adulthood. No one’s handing out gold stars for surviving heartbreak or losing your job and still showing up the next day.

That doesn’t mean you’re failing.

It means you’re learning. The hard way, sure. But still learning.

So if you’re fumbling through things you thought you’d “have figured out by now,” you’re not behind — you’re just human.

School gave us facts. Life gives us plot twists.

And we’re all doing our best with the pages we were never taught to read.
